Egmont Publishing is delighted to have struck a two-book deal with author Sarah Driver.
Building on the success of The Huntress trilogy – which launched as Waterstones Book of the Month in 2017 – Driver brings her skill for world-building and spellbinding storytelling to this new series bursting with magic and adventure.
Once We Were Witches is the story of two sisters, Spel and Egg, in a version of our own world that has magic bubbling under the surface. It is guaranteed to capture the imagination of fans of Philip Pullman, Jessica Townsend and Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching books.
Liz Bankes, Commissioning Editor, signed the deal for World Rights in all languages with Jodie Hodges at United Agents.
Once We Were Witches will publish in March 2020.
In a world where magic is banished and witches hunted without mercy, sisters Spel and Egg have been taught they are the daughters of criminals. But after moving to a funeral parlour with a mysterious new guardian, known only as The Undertaker, the sisters soon realise their true legacy.
Beneath the funeral parlour is a portal to the Other Ways – four worlds that lie parallel to their own. When Egg vanishes through the portal, Spel must step up, and step between worlds, to rescue her sister.
Liz Bankes said, “We are utterly bewitched by Once We Were Witches. Much like Spel getting to step into other worlds, Sarah’s unique voice and unforgettable characters invite readers into worlds that are full of adventure and sparkle with magic. This promises to be one of 2020’s breakout middle grade series.”
Sarah Driver said “I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Egmont again, on this new series. I’ve been delighted by the enthusiasm for the project across the whole house, and feel that Once We Were Witches has found the perfect home. I’m so excited to bring the first book to readers next year.’
