Read 3 top writing tips from Amy Sparkes

Whether you’re writing a book for NaNoWriMo or a story for school, author Amy Sparkes’ top three writing tips will come in handy.

Amy Sparkes writing tips

1. Don’t ignore your instincts. If you feel something isn’t quite right, don’t ignore it to save yourself the hassle of rewriting. It’s hard work, but tackle the problem and you’ll end up with a stronger story.

2. Make every scene earn its keep. If a scene in the story doesn’t add to character development or move the story on, do you really need it? Keep the pace going, especially as the story reaches its conclusion.

3. Check for character consistency. As you reread, make sure you are happy with your characters. Are the voices right? Is each voice distinct or is there some blurring between characters? Are your characters’ personalities, attitudes and actions consistent with who they are and their life experiences?
