Egmont UK has plenty to sing about after snapping up World Rights in all language for Matt Lucas’ updated (s)mash comedy single The Baked Potato. The new record has been released to raise funds for the Feed NHS campaign, with lyrics sharing advice on avoiding coronavirus. All profits from Egmont’s book will also go to the charity. Melissa Fairley, Publishing Director at Egmont, secured the deal with Amanda Harris and Melanie Rockcliffe at YMU Group.
The revised song, first shared on 24 March, has already been viewed by over 3 million people. In its new incarnation, the baked potato instructs people to wash their hands, stay indoors and not touch their faces. Lucas has spoken to actors Damian Lewis and Helen McCrory, as well as Chief Executive of food chain Leon, to set up a campaign to provide hot meals to NHS workers. Feed NHS aims to take food from the thousands of currently shut cafes, restaurants and canteens and redistribute across hospitals. The fundraising page (https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/feednhs) has already raised over £760,000.
Melissa Fairley, Publishing Director, said: ‘I remember the Baked Potato from the first time around and I’m so happy he has returned to cheer everyone up, offer some sound advice and help raise money for a very good cause. So… Thank you, Baked Potato (and lovely Matt Lucas!).’
Matt Lucas said: ‘I am chuffed to bits that we are bringing out this book of the song so that children can help remember how to stay safe. I’m also thrilled that all of the proceeds will go to FeedNHS, ensuring that we can continue to deliver hot, nourishing food free of charge to our NHS critical care staff on the front line.’
