Egmont pockets debut from rising star Aisha Bushby

Egmont Publishing are thrilled to announce a two book deal from award-winning writer Aisha Bushby.

The first of Bushby’s middle-grade titles, A Pocketful of Stars, will publish in June 2019. A second stand-alone title will follow in 2020. Both titles will showcase Bushby’s ability to weave a magical twist through heartfelt, funny contemporary fiction.

Safiya and her mum have never seen eye to eye, and her mum seems to disapprove of everything Safiya does. But when her mum suddenly falls into a coma, Safiya anxiously waits by her bedside, day and night. Then the memories begin… Safiya finds herself in 1980s Kuwait, and she sees a rebellious young girl who looks suspiciously familiar.

A Pocketful of Stars is the story of a girl uncovering the truth about her family’s past that makes her question everything in the present.

Liz Bankes, Fiction Commissioning Editor at Egmont Publishing, signed the deal with Claire Wilson at Rogers, Coleridge & White for World English rights.

Liz Bankes said: ‘A Pocketful of Stars is funny, magical and heartbreaking – and its author is a future star of children’s books. We’re thrilled to be welcoming the ridiculously talented Aisha Bushby to Egmont. We know her voice will really connect widely with middle-grade readers, and represent the world they see around them (with an extra sprinkle of magic!)’

Aisha Bushby said: ‘I knew Liz was the editor I wanted to work with the moment we sat down to speak. Her editorial expertise and vision, combined with Egmont’s astute knowledge of the market, make them a magical publisher to work with. I’m thrilled and so very lucky to be a part of the team.’

Aisha Bushby was selected as one of only four new authors in the Stripes anthology for BAME writers, A Change is Gonna Come, alongside writers such as Patrice Lawrence, Tanya Byrne and Nikesh Shukla. The anthology was awarded a YA Book Prize Special Achievement Award.

Since then she has been taking part in panels, interviews and events across the UK, from Bristol Waterstones to Manchester Academy, Birmingham Literature Festival to Southbank YALW, BBC Radio 3 to Buzzfeed.

A Pocketful of Stars by Aisha Bushby will be published on 30th May 2019.
